We are proud to share the successful completion of Cohort 1 of the Rhythm & Resilience Dance Program, a 20-week initiative designed to support newcomer youth aged 8–14 through movement, creativity, and social-emotional learning.

Throughout the program, over 20 youth participated in weekly sessions at our office that combined dance instruction with facilitated group activities. The program was intentionally designed to be a fun, supportive, and welcoming space where youth could build confidence, explore emotions, form friendships, and practice making wise choices together.

Building Skills Through Dance & SEL

Rhythm & Resilience is grounded in a Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) framework, with activities aligned to the five core competencies:

  • Self-Awareness
  • Self-Management
  • Social Awareness
  • Relationship Skills
  • Responsible Decision-Making

Through guided discussions, collaborative exercises, and creative movement, youth practiced expressing themselves, regulating emotions, listening to others, and working as a team. Many shared that they now feel more confident speaking up and more comfortable working collaboratively in group settings—important skills they can carry into school, friendships, and everyday life.

A Showcase Within a Celebration

This cohort concluded with a special community showcase held during our annual Children’s Holiday Party, making the experience even more memorable for participants and their families. Youth performed their original group choreographies—each created through weeks of collaboration and creativity—before a warm and supportive audience.

Following their performances, participants had the opportunity to fully enjoy the holiday celebration alongside other children and families. Activities included ornament-making, writing holiday cards, face painting, balloon creations, and festive games. The day was made extra special with a visit from Santa Claus, who delighted the children with gifts and holiday cheer.

Bringing the showcase into this joyful community celebration allowed youth not only to share their growth on stage, but also to feel included, celebrated, and connected during a meaningful cultural moment.

This program was led and coordinated by Marilyn, whose guidance and care helped shape Rhythm & Resilience into a meaningful and supportive experience for participants.
