From a Small Women’s Group to a Multicultural Hub…
Founded in 1982, the Vietnamese Women’s Association of Toronto (VWAT) – now operating as VWAT Family Services – has evolved over the past 40 years into a trusted organization in the community. Originally established to support Vietnamese women facing domestic violence and language barriers, VWAT provided a crucial lifeline to those unable to access essential services.
Becoming a Strong Multicultural Support Centre
Today, VWAT has grown into a robust multicultural service centre, serving newcomers, seniors, youth, and immigrant families. Over four decades, the organization has played a vital role in helping thousands of refugees and immigrants integrate successfully into Canadian society.
In line with Canada’s cultural diversity, VWAT’s mission is not only to help clients adapt, but also to create a sense of belonging as they start their new lives.
Mr. Vinh Truong, Executive Director of VWAT, shared:
“With a highly experienced and continually learning team, we are constantly improving our services to better support the community. In addition to settlement services, we offer programs such as tai chi and cardio dance for seniors, children’s summer camps, health workshops, and youth post-secondary readiness support.”
In April 2025, VWAT expanded its staff team by 33% to meet the growing needs of the community and ensure more effective service delivery. Currently, non-Vietnamese clients account for 40% of VWAT’s clientele – a clear reflection of its growth and multicultural outreach.
A Remarkable Milestone: Welcoming Our 9,999th and 10,000th Clients
In July 2025, VWAT proudly celebrated the milestone of serving its 9,999th, Mr. Vu Nguyen, and 10,000th clients, Mr. Khang Nguyen, marking an important chapter in its service journey. VWAT held an intimate office gathering on August 5, 2025 to present a commemorative gift to Mr. Vu and his family. Mr. Khang’s gift will be presented at a later date due to work commitments.

Ms. Binh Minh Hoang, President of VWAT, shared:
“Reaching 10,000 clients is a testament to the trust and growth the community has placed in us. It is a strong motivation to keep striving forward.”
Thank You to Our Community
VWAT sincerely thanks the community for its trust and support over the past 40 years. Every client we serve is part of a greater story of integration, hope, and new beginnings. We look forward to continuing to be a trusted companion for all newcomers beginning their journey in Canada.
