VWAT Participates in International Yoga Day 2026

On June 21, 2026, members and volunteers of VWAT Family Services proudly participated in the International Yoga Day celebration at our office in Toronto, joining thousands of people from diverse cultural backgrounds in promoting health, wellness, and community connection.

The event brought together participants of all ages to experience the physical, mental, and emotional benefits of yoga. VWAT members enthusiastically took part in the group yoga session, learning simple techniques that can improve flexibility, reduce stress, and enhance overall well-being.

As an organization committed to supporting healthy and active lifestyles, VWAT recognizes the importance of activities that promote both physical and mental health. Participation in International Yoga Day also provided an excellent opportunity for our members to connect with other communities, celebrate cultural diversity, and foster a sense of belonging.

Many of our senior members were especially inspired by the event, discovering that yoga can be adapted to different fitness levels and can play an important role in healthy aging. The experience reinforced VWAT’s ongoing commitment to offering programs and activities that support wellness, social engagement, and lifelong learning.

VWAT looks forward to continuing to promote health, inclusion, and community participation through future events and partnerships.

Together, we celebrate wellness, diversity, and the power of community.

International Yoga Day is celebrated annually on June 21 to promote the physical, mental, and spiritual benefits of yoga worldwide.

International Yoga Day was officially established by the United Nations in 2014 following a proposal by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with 177 member states co-sponsoring the resolution, making it the most widely supported UN resolution of its kind. The date, June 21, was chosen as it coincides with the summer solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, symbolizing light, energy, and longevity

History and Significance

Yoga is an ancient practice originating in India over 5,000 years ago, designed to unite the mind, body, and spirit. The term “yoga” comes from Sanskrit, meaning “to join” or “to unite,” reflecting the integration of physical postures, breathing techniques, and meditation . The first International Yoga Day was celebrated on June 21, 2015, in New Delhi, where nearly 36,000 participants, including PM Modi and dignitaries from 84 nations, performed 21 asanas for 35 minutes, setting Guinness World Records for the largest yoga session and most nationalities represented .

Global Observance

International Yoga Day is now celebrated worldwide, with events in countries such as the United States, Canada, China, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and Nepal. Activities include mass yoga sessions, workshops, and community events promoting wellness, mindfulness, and healthy living. The 2026 theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” emphasizes yoga’s benefits for all ages, supporting balance, flexibility, strength, mobility, and mental well-being . In the U.S., events were held at the Lincoln Memorial and National Mall, while in India, leaders like President Droupadi Murmu and PM Modi participated in mass yoga sessions .
